About Klaus Voormann
Klaus Voormann, a close friend of the Beatles, designed the iconic album cover for their 1966 album, Revolver. The cover is a unique blend of line drawing and collage, incorporating photographs primarily taken by Robert Freeman. Voormann's design aimed to visually represent the band's new, experimental musical direction, particularly evident in songs like "Tomorrow Never Knows". He won a Grammy Award for his artwork in 1967, specifically for Best Cover - Graphic Arts, marking a significant milestone for rock and pop album art according to Genesis Publications.
Voormann's design for Revolver is notable for its black and white aesthetic, a deliberate contrast to the preference for vivid colors in album art at the time. The cover features a collage of the Beatles' faces, with some elements inspired by the work of the late-Victorian artist Aubrey Beardsley. He also incorporated his own likeness into the artwork, adding another layer of personal connection to the project.
In addition to his work on Revolver, Voormann has a long-standing relationship with the Beatles, playing bass on their solo projects and designing artwork for other albums like The Beatles Anthology. He even designed the cover for George Harrison's 1988 single, "When We Was Fab," which included an updated version of his Revolver artwork.
